Life After Repton Abu Dhabi

At Repton Abu Dhabi, we take pride in our alumni and their journeys beyond school. This week, we caught up with Mahmoud Nassef, a 2023 graduate, who shared his experiences as a university student in Austria and his reflections on life after Repton.

Introducing Mahmoud

“Hello! I’m Mahmoud Nassef, and I graduated from Repton Abu Dhabi in 2023 after completing A-Levels in Maths, Physics, Biology, and AS Chemistry. I am currently pursuing a degree in Artificial Intelligence at Johannes Kepler University in Linz, Austria.”

The Transition from High School to University

For Mahmoud, the shift from high school to university life brought newfound independence. “At school, parents and teachers are there to guide you, but in university, you’re responsible for keeping yourself on track. It’s challenging but rewarding—I enjoy the freedom it brings.”

Surprisingly, Mahmoud found that the rigorous preparation during his A-Levels made university feel more manageable. “If you’re smart about time management and avoid procrastination, you should be fine. Everyone’s experience is different, but for me, A-Levels were more stressful than university.”

Exploring a New Environment

Mahmoud has fully embraced life in Austria, where he enjoys travelling by train with friends to explore cities like Salzburg, Vienna, and the picturesque Austrian countryside. “I love the ease of travelling here—it’s incredible to visit mountains, museums, or lakes, all just a short trip away.”

Adapting to his new environment included learning German, which he considers one of the most enriching aspects of his academic journey. “Learning a new language allows you to ‘unlock’ an entire culture, giving you access to music, films, and traditions you didn’t previously know.”

Life as a University Student

A typical day for Mahmoud begins with a tram or bike ride to campus, followed by lectures and lunch with friends. When he has free time, he enjoys outdoor activities like cycling, table tennis, or walks in the city. His favourite academic moments include studying the societal impact of Artificial Intelligence and mastering the German language.

Advice for Future Reptonians

For students considering studying abroad, Mahmoud emphasises the importance of learning the local language and making decisions for yourself. “Don’t choose a university just because your friends are going there—make choices that align with your goals.”

He also advises applying early and cherishing your high school years. “Don’t take your time at school for granted. Create good memories with your friends—they’re invaluable.”

Challenges, Growth, and Future Goals

Living abroad has taught Mahmoud resilience and independence. “I’ve learned that I can rely on myself to get things done, both academically and in life.” Despite occasional nostalgia for his school days, he has adapted by staying connected with friends through messages, memes, and the occasional meet-up in Europe.

Looking ahead, Mahmoud dreams of saving enough money to travel the world and work remotely. “University has shown me how vast the world is and how much it has to offer. I’d like to explore as much of it as I can and not confine myself to one place.”

Mahmoud’s journey is a testament to the power of independence, adaptability, and the value of a strong foundation at Repton Abu Dhabi. We wish him continued success and look forward to seeing all that he will achieve in the future!
